Most visitors to Samal Island mainly visit there for the beaches but beyond the pristine sands are several undiscovered gems- like the Monfort Bat Colony. It’s a large cavern located in the small village of Tambo, and recently recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest colony of fruit bats on the planet. It’s such a pleasure to be visiting a place that’s Guinness- recognized. I was in awe when I entered the colony, but beware: the caves are rather foul-smelling so go there with a strong stomach. And 1.8 million bats? Simply WOW.
TIP: Go there around 5PM onwards to take advantage before they wake in search of food.
